Greencat52′, the Chantier de l’Arsenal’s made-to-measure adventure.
15 October 2023
The first 100% custom-built composite pleasure catamaran built by the Chantier de l’Arsenal, the GREENCAT 52′ has been on display since 19 September in the port of Les Minimes in La Rochelle.
Designed by architect Philippe Renaudeau, construction began in 2022 at the Chantier de l’Arsenal and she was delivered on schedule in September 2023.
Paul and Emmanuelle, young retirees, wanted to sail around the world in a catamaran, and they had a fairly clear idea of the boat of their dreams. Their voyage will take place on a lightweight catamaran that is efficient under sail, simply equipped and environmentally friendly. Their project also needs to fit within a controlled budget and within a relatively short timescale. They visited a number of boats with their precise vision in mind, but none of them completely met their expectations.
In the course of their meetings, they came across Michel Vermeulen, Europ Yachting and Solaris France, for advice before investing in a cruising catamaran.
Their discussions quickly led them to the obvious conclusion: have a catamaran built entirely to measure. And to do that, they needed two key elements: an architect in tune with their expectations and a shipyard capable of building 100% custom composite boats.
Key meetings
Michel Vermeulen introduced Paul and Emmanuelle to Philippe Renaudeau, a naval architect based in the Marseille region. He works for PHR Yacht Design and wanted to take the ecological dimension into account in his designs.
From the very first meeting, Paul and Emmanuel knew that Philippe Renaudeau was the right person to design their long-awaited boat.
The 2nd decisive meeting was with Laurent Da Rold, President of the Chantier de l’Arsenal.
This shipyard is one of a kind: it has a large design office, Yacht Concept, with a staff of 20, enabling it to take on complex, 100% made-to-measure composite projects.
The made-to-measure adventure
Taking part in the creation of your own boat is an extraordinary human adventure. Paul and Emmanuelle were accompanied throughout their project by Philippe Renaudeau and the Yacht Concept design office, so that together they could find the best possible options for their project. Paul and Emmanuelle were able to visit the shipyard as often as they liked to see how their boat was progressing, creating a very special relationship. What’s more, knowing your boat by heart before setting off on a long-haul voyage is extremely reassuring in terms of safety.
